Honda VFR800 VTEC

A decent sport-tourer that can still hang with the best of them

Advantages: Honda reliability, good handling/brakes, fantastic V4 engine
Disadvantages: It's a bit clinical, and you may not like the linked brakes.
The VFR is another iconic bike, which started life as an all out racer, sporting it's V4 engine with pride. Through the years though, it has been softened down and has lost some of it's racing pedigree. Lucky for us though, that it has! No longer is the VFR a race bike, it's a sport tourer, which is biased towards the sports side of the equation.

If i could describe it in a nutshell, I'd say it's like a CBR600F for grown ups. It has a similar riding position, though less cramped, and it has near to the same beautiful handling. OK so not quite, but it's a nicely balanced machine, offering plenty of smiles in the twisties. It also has a decent fairing, which doesn't create too much noise or buffetting, however it lets the wind hold you upright at motorway speeds which is nice.

The VFR800 is a great all round machine. The suspension is stiff enough to provide ample feedback, the brakes, though they are linked, are really good, I generally only use the front most of the time, so for me the linked brakes work well. You can really give it some welly when you fancy having some fun, and when you just want to do some long distance touring it'll settle down and let you enjoy the scenery without the need for too much input.

There is one cause of controversy with the new VFR, and that's in the VTEC engine. Yes, it's a V4, so it gives you a bit of midrange grunt as well as screaming highs, but Honda have fitted the VTEC system to this one. To explain simply... The engine uses only 2 valves per cylinder at low revs, which offers more grunt, but then when you hit about 7000rpm the VTEC system kicks in and offers 4 valves per cylinder, to give more top end horsepower. In essence and on paper, it's a rather cunning idea, however in reality it's a bit like having a sudden turbo kick which comes on a little too swiftly for some, it's a bit like flicking a switch. To be honest though I think that the feeling's more psychological than anything, as it suddenly roars at 7k, making you think you're going quicker than you are. It's far from a 2 stroke powerband anyway.

Recently Honda have tuned the system a bit, so it comes on earlier and switches off later so you don't get a jerky throttle response, however it's far too complicated for me to try to explain! It works though.

So it's got a great engine. Stick some aftermarket cans on and you can enjoy motoGP style notation that only the Ducati Desmosidici RR can offer. OK so the Viffer's got about half the horsepower and it's not a road going GP rep, but the sound of a race can from a V4 is just plain awesome.

OK so it's a great bike, offering over 100bhp, nicely balanced handling and ample feedback, but that's only half the story. This bike is a sport-tourer, and so tour we must!

There are plenty of gadgets, fuel gauge, digital speedo, a couple of trip meters, I believe heated grips are an option, and it's got a 22 litre fuel tank. Use that wisely and you should see 200 miles to a tank thanks to it's gearing, which means you can sit at motorway speeds and hardly even notice the engine is running!

It's a great touring bike. The position is a little on the cramped side for some, the pegs are a bit high and the bars are a bit low, but really unless you're doing silly miles per day you're not gonna suffer with any real aches, and it's not squeezing you into a racer's crouch. My personal thoughts are to raise the bars by about an inch, but I'm used to riding big comfy trailies. The seat is comfortable, it becomes a little on the hard side after a couple of hours, but nothing that a quick petrol stop can't remedy. The beautiful thing with these bikes, all the sport tourers in fact, is that they give you a perfect balance between bum and wrists, so instead of just getting a sore bum like you would on a harley or other tourers, or getting sore wrists like on sports bikes, you get slight wrist aches and slight bum ache. Nicely balanced!

I rode a brand new one and looked at an 04 one, and there's not much difference in all fairness. The new ones are about £8000, but second hand, reasonable examples can be had for about £4000-£4500, which is actually great value for money, plus it's a Honda, they just last forever!
Summary: I reviewed the triumph sprint a while ago and said it was king. Now I'm not so sure! Tough decision!

Honda Deauville NT650V

A real Martini motorbike - any time, any place, anywhere!

Advantages: Excellent comfort, good economy and low running costs.
Disadvantages: Sometimes clunky gearbox. Poor rear view mirrors & accessibility for DIY mechanic.
I traded in a 2000 Triumph Sprint ST for a low mileage 2001 Honda NT650V Deauville which I chose in preference to the 2002 model as I didn’t want the linked brakes of the newer bike. I’ve added a MRA Vario Touring screen, wind deflectors and heated grips (for winter riding), a fenda extenda to the front mudguard, a 42 litre Kappa topbox for added capacity and a power socket (to recharge my mobile). The result is an easy to ride motorcycle that keeps off the worst of the weather and does everything I need of a motorbike. Handling is predictable, improved by replacing the origin Michelin tyres (at 3,500 miles) with Avons Azaros that show little sign of wear after 6,000 miles. Servicing is every 4,000 miles so I alternate between doing the work myself and having it done professionally. Like many Deauville owners I get really annoyed with the bike press who slag the Deauville for being boring and dull. It gets me from A to B in comfort and safety and at a reasonable speed with consistent fuel economy around 55mpg. Insurance is cheap at just under £100 Fully Comp, it starts on the button the just gets on and does exactly what you ask it to do, solo or two up. Plus there are active owner’s websites in the UK (www.deauvilleuk.org) and in Europe where every aspect of ownership is covered. What more do you want?
Summary: Far better than the press would have you believe.

HERO HONDA GLAMOUR

Hi, its been more than 1year that i am driving glamour without even a single accident but still my tale light & others back body parts are broken up and daily getting more damage. The tale light & its

below portion (curve part) and the side parts where this part is joined are broken completely. At first the curve parts one screw was suddenly out. Then by the time their occurred some cracks in the left side part. Then the curve part below light tore off completely also many damages occurred but the surprising thing is I never ever had an accident so i cannot even claim. Also i do not drive harsh. Its mileage is good, battery is gr8 and i luv its engine but those parts which are made of fiber are not at all trust worthy. Also i had seen this broken parts in many glamour bikes in my city. I think the company must review its design and put some more strong metal with same shape and company must replace this part in every bike. Its an bad impression on company name. I love hero honda and also had many other bikes in my house which are of hero honda brand. Company must replace those back side part

“Hunk”

“Hunk” appears to be a decent looking motorcycle with its small fairing and has tank shrouds. The tank shrouds are big and Hunk’s tank has good knee recess. Similar to some popular international bikes, Hunk’s telescopic fork is golden in colour.
This nicely gels with the 5 spoke black alloy wheels. The gas holder of the rear suspension is also golden. Hero Honda’s hunk embraces the contemporary black theme - the handlebar weight, alloy wheels, silencer guard and the grab rail of the new Hunk are painted black. Suspension is through telescopic fork at the front and the rear suspension is a 5 step adjustable gas charged one.
Like Super Splendour Hunk features tripod instrumentation. Fuel gauge, speedometer and rpm meter are analogue. Contemporary pilot lamps and LED tail lamps fails to find a place in the Hero Honda’s new Hunk. Hunk’s battery is the same 12V-7Ah and the ignition is through AMI(Advanced Microprocessor Ignition).
Hunk’s engine is same as the X-Treme’s 4 stroke 150cc engine. It develops 14bhp at 8500rpm of power and 12.8Nm of Torque. Hunk’s 150cc engine is mated with a conventional 5speed gearbox. Similar to the TVS CVTi engine the Hunk’s 150cc engine produces tumble induction for efficient burning which means more efficiency.
Hero Honda has launched Hunk at a starting price of Rs 55,000 (at ex-showroom Delhi as on 17th Oct,2007). Hero Honda has launched two variants, kick-start and self-start. While kick-start would be available at Rs 55,000, the company would charge a premium of Rs 2,000 for the self-start model which is priced at Rs 57,000.
It is available in four colours - black, blue, red and silver
